L.E.T.T.E.R.S.© Reformatting April 27-30, 2015

A visit to the printing company resulted in the news that the file format used to develop L.E.T.T.E.R.S.© learning resources was not the optimum choice.

After a one-hour lesson with a graphic designer we knew we had our work cut out for us.

Since then we are continuing to convert L.E.T.T.E.R.S.© four books and many flashcards into Adobe InDesign CS3.

L.E.T.T.E.R.S.© launched their educational products at the BC CHEC in Kelowna, BC, Canada.

Our curriculum and resources were a big hit! One family ordered everything L.E.T.T.E.R.S.© had available!

Being at BC CHEC gave us many leads for future orders.

Visitors to the L.E.T.T.E.R.S.© booth were heard saying the curriculum is “brilliant” and that L.E.T.T.E.R.S.© offers learning methods “never seen before.”

"Letter to the Educator"
I wrote this letter to the educator to explain what motivates me to continue working on L.E.T.T.E.R.S. and what an educator can expect from L.E.T.T.E.R.S. curriculum and resources.

Types of Dyslexia

Different kinds of dyslexia would require different kinds of interventions. This suggests it is important we identify any varieties that might exist. As a first step, consider the diagram below that classifies reading disabilities into three groups. About 20% of people have a reading disability and they fall somewhere in the three blue circles depending on their deficits.

There are three specific reading deficits:

  • Phonological Deficit
Difficulty decoding or assembling words based on their sounds.

  • Speed/Naming Deficit
Slow reading; poor use of sight words. A sight word is a word that is instantly recognized by the reader; is not sounded out, and requires almost no effort to understand.

  • Comprehension Deficit
Poor understanding of what was just read.

All varieties of dyslexia involve a significant phonological deficit, regardless of whether there is a comprehension or speed deficit. In practice, most dyslexics have at least two deficits.
